Troubleshooting paths

[Before you start]

Have these ready.

A clean installation starts with the right tools on the bench.

01A digital multimeter
02An inline fuse holder and a fuse of no more than 2 A
03An EMC-safe soldering iron, or approved connectors
04Heat-shrink tubing and insulating tape
05Cable ties for strain relief
06SConnect on an Android or iOS phone
[Wiring at a glance]

Five connections. One clean installation.

SC-1 needs constant power, switched power, ground and the two wires of the CAN pair. Nothing more.

[Warnings]

Read these before you begin.

Six rules that protect the vehicle, the installation and your time.

01

Never cut or extend CAN wires

Cutting or lengthening the twisted pair changes the network and can disturb other control units. Tap it in place, through a short window of insulation.

02

Use an EMC-safe soldering iron

A mains iron without proper grounding can damage control units. Use an EMC-safe or battery-powered iron, or approved connectors.

03

Vehicle transport mode

New vehicles can leave the factory in transport mode, which limits or switches off some systems. Have the dealer deactivate it before installation.

04

Constant +30 that switches off

On some vehicles, a feed that looks constant switches off 1–2 Stunden after the vehicle is locked. Choose a true constant feed, or SC-1 loses power while parked.

05

Shared ground

SC-1 and the system it connects to must share the same ground. Separate grounds can cause communication errors.

06

Electric vehicles: READY

On electric and hybrid vehicles, the vehicle must be in READY mode during power-up and the road test. With the ignition merely on, some networks stay asleep.

[Step by step]

Eight steps to a working SC-1.

Work through them in order. Each step ends with the checks to tick before you move on.

  1. Step 1/8

    Plan the location

Choose a dry place inside the cabin, away from heat sources, moving parts and airbag deployment zones. Keep the LEDs where a technician can see them, and leave room to route cables without tension.

    • Dry location inside the cabin, rated IP40
    • Clear of airbags, pedals and moving parts
    • LEDs visible for service
    MOUNTING ZONECABIN
  2. Step 2/8

Identify constant +30, switched +15 and ground

Use the vehicle’s wiring diagram and confirm each feed with a multimeter. Constant +30 stays live with the ignition off. Switched +15 is live only with the ignition on. Ground must be a solid chassis or harness ground.

    • +30 live with the ignition off
    • +15 live only with the ignition on
    • Ground with solid continuity to the chassis
    • A constant feed that stays live while the vehicle sleeps
    IGNITION OFFIGNITION ON+30 constant+15 switchedGroundLIVELIVEOFFLIVE
  3. Step 3/8

    Fit the fuse

Fit an inline fuse of no more than 2 A on the constant +30 feed, as close to the tap point as practical. Never take power from a feed without a fuse.

    • Fuse of no more than 2 A
    • On the constant +30 feed
    • As close to the tap point as practical
    TAP POINT≤ 2 AFUSE+30 constantSC-1
  4. Step 4/8

    Locate the twisted CAN pair

Find the twisted CAN-H and CAN-L pair at a sensible, accessible point, such as near a control unit connector and away from airbag and safety-system wiring. Confirm the pair with a multimeter before you touch it: on high-speed CAN with the network awake, CAN-H reads about 2,5–3,5 V and CAN-L about 1,5–2,5 V to ground.

    • Twisted pair, both wires confirmed
    • CAN-H ≈ 2,5–3,5 V to ground
    • CAN-L ≈ 1,5–2,5 V to ground
    • Away from airbag and safety-system wiring
    CONTROL UNITTAP POINTCAN-H ≈ 2,5–3,5 VCAN-L ≈ 1,5–2,5 V
  5. Step 5/8

    Connect

Open a short window of insulation without cutting the conductor, then solder with an EMC-safe iron or use approved connectors. Insulate every joint, keep the branch to SC-1 short and secure the cables against strain. Never cut or extend the vehicle’s CAN wires.

    • No CAN wire cut or extended
    • EMC-safe soldering, or approved connectors
    • Every joint insulated
    • Short branch, cables secured

  6. Step 6/8

Power up and check the LEDs

Reconnect power and switch the ignition on. POWER lights up when supply is present, and CAN shows activity once the vehicle network is awake. ERROR stays off.

    • POWER lit
    • CAN shows activity with the ignition on
    • ERROR off

  7. Step 7/8

Pair in SConnect and confirm the device status

Open SConnect, pair with SC-1 over Bluetooth and check the device status in the app. From here, SConnect guides you through the rest of the setup.

    • Bluetooth on, phone near the vehicle
    • SC-1 paired in SConnect
    • Device status confirmed in the app
    SConnectSC-1CONNECTEDSC-1
  8. Step 8/8

Road test, four wheels on the ground

Finish with a short drive on the road with all four wheels on the ground: no lift, no roller test bench. Follow the prompts in SConnect until the setup is complete.

    • Four wheels on the ground
    • No lift and no roller test bench
    • Setup completed in SConnect

[Reference values]

Three measurements worth knowing.

On high-speed CAN, with a digital multimeter:

Network awake

≈ 2,5–3,5 V

CAN-H to ground

Network awake

≈ 1,5–2,5 V

CAN-L to ground

Ignition off, network asleep

[Troubleshooting]

Find the cause, step by step.

Choose what you see on SC-1, then work through the checks in order. Tick each one as you go.

What do you see?

Checks · No POWER

0 of 6 checked
  1. Check the fuse

Inspect the fuse on the constant +30 feed and test it for continuity. Replace it with a fuse of no more than 2 A.

  2. Measure the supply at SC-1

    Expected7,5–32 V DC

With the ignition off, measure between +30 and ground at the SC-1 connection.

  3. Check switched +15

With the ignition on, +15 must be live at the SC-1 connection.

  4. Check the ground

Measure continuity between the SC-1 ground and the chassis. Loose or painted ground points are a frequent cause.

  5. Transport mode

On new vehicles, make sure transport mode has been deactivated.

  6. A feed that switches off

If POWER goes out after the vehicle has been parked for a while, the feed is not truly constant. Move to a constant +30 feed.
